WRF-Chem-Polar

A regional chemistry-climate model for the polar regions, based on WRF-Chem

WRF-Chem-Polar is a regional chemistry-climate model based on WRF-Chem, with enhancements for the polar regions. It builds on our implementation of surface and blowing-snow sources of Arctic bromine activation (Marelle et al., 2021) and is used to study aerosols, halogen and mercury chemistry, boundary-layer processes and clouds in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Developed at IGE and LATMOS by Louis Marelle, Ruth Price, Rémy Lapere, Lucas Bastien, Lucas Giboni, Anderson Da Silva, Jean-Christophe Raut and Jennie Thomas.

Microplastics-enabled GEOS-Chem

A version of the global GEOS-Chem chemical transport model that simulates atmospheric microplastics

Developed at IGE, this microplastics-enabled configuration of GEOS-Chem combines GCClassic-MP (the “Classic” model configuration) with HEMCO-MP (a microplastics-enabled emissions component), plus shared infrastructure for pre- and post-processing of microplastic and mercury simulations. It underpins our work on global atmospheric microplastic emissions and cycling, such as Hough et al. (2026, preprint).

Tools I use

FLEXPART

The FLEXible PARTicle Lagrangian dispersion model, used to trace pollution transport to the Arctic (flexpart.eu).

FLEXPART-WRF

FLEXPART driven by WRF meteorology for high-resolution transport studies (documentation).
